Sultan of Johore

It was a monumental moment for the Bugis Malay Society (Singapore) being granted to meet Duli Yang Maha Mulia, Tuanku Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar at his premise in Istana Bukit Pelangi on the 20th May 2018 at 0930hrs.

Thank you DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar for your time and hospitality in granting us our wish to meet you at your premise at Johore Best 104 FM, Istana Bukit Pelangi, Johor Bahru today.
Duli Yang Maha Mulia, Tuanku Sultan Ibdahim.

When we arrived, Tuanku was surprised to see the 5-key representatives and several accompanying members trailing behind. Tuanku was so kind that he decided to meet everyone at his verandah and not in his office, making sure everyone had a chance to converse with him. Tuanku mentioned that he could not offer us any coffee because 'everyone is fasting right?'.

When we all settled to our seats, Tuanku observed at each and everyone of us and asked us 'Are you all Bugis'. I could see the surprise in his expression when we answered 'yes' with conviction. Some if us were practically tongue-tied when we spoke to Tuanku Sultan of Johore for the very first time.
Presenting to Tuanku our Society plaque to commemorate our appreciation and future ties with Johore Royal House.

Nevertheless, we felt very fortunate abd blessed. We introduced ourselves to Tuanku and had an hour and the half of fruitful conversation and sharing of knowledge. Tuanku was really interested in the existence of the Bugis community in Singapore. I wish I had more with Tuanku!

Tuanku has shown interest in the current and future activities by Singapore Bugis Malay Association (PMBS) and has given some suggestions to move forward. He also shared several historical and monumental events of his family and the relationship between Johor and Singapore.

I am with Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar

I have been yearning to meet Sultan of Johore since I discovered my Bugis roots. My mother told me a lot about the Sultan of Johore because she was once from Cedar Girls' Secondary School and she would always pass an old lake at Bidadari that was once an estate acquired by Sri Maharaja Abu Bakar, the Great-great-grandfather of today's Sultan that I met, Sultan Ibdahim Ibni Sultan Iskandar. Our purpose today was to ask for his moral support and advice for any of our Bugis Malay Society future events. In addition, I got to ask him other issues like the fate of Istana Woodneuk, Radin Mas, untold history of Masjid Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim Telok Blangah Singapura , the real Radin Mas, Bidadari Cemetery, mode of Bugis transports from Riau, Sg to Tg Surat, Syair Abu Bakar, land titles and many more.

An hour and the half was not enough. We spoke about Penyengat, Makassar and also future events in Johore which he would like our Bugis Society to be involved too. Sultan Ibrahim welcomed us warmly. It was initially planned for only five of us meet him in his office; Raja M KhalidIbrahim AriffNoor Lizah Nurdin,  Haslinna Jaaman and myself. But because he went out of his office to his verandah and saw a larger group, he said with a broad smile,"wow ramai nya orang Singapura, lets talk outside then". Today's meet was like a dream come true.
Hope to meet you again. Daulat Tuanku !

Of wizards, pirates and seafarers - by Sanif Olek

Image may contain: Cucu Tok Bakar and Tuah Bugis, people smiling, people standing
Before ruthless European colonization, before the “founding” by western traders, before passports and slaves, Southeast Asia was a single entity, inhabited by diverse communities that traveled freely into one another’s lands. And the occasional willful, infighting kings and revengeful warriors that were legendary and became colourful, popular tales.
▫️
With such conversation in mind, this picture came about. Imagine, some time in those ancient days, a Bugis and a Bawean sitting side by side, speaking in a familiar respective, colourful language, wearing distinctive threads that define one another and extending the Silatur-rahim within the Nusantara.
▫️
That’s Sarafian, who is proudly wearing the traditional court attire of the Bugis people. He mentioned that the Bugis sarong is identified by a distinctive gold thread weaving. His keris is tucked at the waist. The Bawean (the land) is identified by a distinctive deer only found on the island. The Bugis were known to be boat builders and ruthless sea warriors who used to rule much of the south china seas. The Bawean, who used to leave the island with women while the men folks travelled the seas to find rezki for their respective families (thus, “The Isle of Women”), were rumoured to harbour special skills of the fourth dimension. Interesting tales indeed 🤠.
▫️
These days, the descendants of the Bawean and Bugis in Singapore hang out at heartland kopitiams for teh tarek and chatted about being warriors during national service. Oh, the Indians and Chinese buddies will chip in to share shenanigans while donning the camouflaged greens too. 🤪

Barongko Bugis

Barongko cake (Kue Barongko) is made from finely ground bananas (Pisang Kepok) and then mixed with coconut milk, condensed milk, sugar and vanilla extract, egg-yoke then packed in softened banana leaves. This cake is often served on certain occasions such as weddings, circumcision and religious gatherings. This cake is a must-have dessert for every Bugis family as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage with sweetness to last a lifetime.
Kueh Barongko is a traditional Bugis Makassar dessert.

Banana leaves were heated on a stove to get a soft foldable texture and aroma.

Bugis Temasek gets a new logo after 10 years of connecting Bugis around Asia and the World.

The Bugis Temasek logo emphasis the famous Bugis sailing ship called the Phinisi as the focal point because these ships were the enablers of maritime trade, migration, maritime defence and display of power since the 18th century. The seven sails on the ship represents the seven seas the Bugis have travelled, either by their own craft or as a community. The 2018 logo is set with the hull pointing almost forward and seen with the seven sails fully blown, denoting our prosperity and progress, and continuously moving forward towards nation building.

This is a Bugis cusine called Coto Makassar. The taste is rather quite similar to that of Soto Javanese &  Soto Minang. However, there is some difference in the ingredients which makes this cuisine unique. Here are some photos that will give us an idea of some of the ingredients that made this food uniquely Bugis. Many thanks to Norzihan Zainudin for the cooking and preparation Coto Makassar, a hallmark dish that is still preserved by migrants of the Bugis community.

Coto Makassar goes well with white rice or Burasak. Burasak is compacted rice cooked in coconut milk and wrapped twice in banana leave and cooked for a minimum of 6hrs.

Gound peanut is one of the ingredients to produce a viscous gravy.

Tao Cho, chilli padi and garlic for the sambal

Basic ingredients for Coto Makassar. The water that has been used to wash the rice is reused to boil the meat. This process is to remove the meaty smell of the beef/mutton during serving or when cold.

All ingredients are blended to produce a thick and delicious gravy

Coto Makassar, my style....
Coto Makassar is one of our delicious traditional foods that you can find in Makassar, South Sulawesi. I tasted the original Coto Makassar and decided to replicate that taste similar to the 'warong' that Tauhid Muhd and me ate just along Universitas Hassanudin. Armed with recipe from my 'twin' in Pontian and reminiscing the taste from Makassar through taste buds enabled me to worked my way through to achieve the exact scent (puasa). The X-tra ingredients that has differed from the regular Javanese Soto were rice-water, ground peanuts and tau-choh. Watch the video and you will see how these ingredients were fused to produce this refreshing dish. Try it and let me know.
Ian can cook, so can you!!
